Wilde Zwijnen

Our last night in Amsterdam we dined at Wilde Zwijnen. Located in an up and coming residential neighborhood in Amsterdam East, the restaurant is well know by locals, attracting a young adventuresome crowd. Our taxi driver was surprised we knew of it.

The atmosphere was casual, with wooden tables and bare brick walls. If a reservation is made in advance, the reservation name is written on the table in chalk.

Our waitress was sweet, but told us she didn't have time to describe menu items as too many of her coworkers had called in with the flu. The four of us ordered the recommended cider apéritif, and winged it from there.

Marlene and I both started with a tempura-like dish of carrots and mushrooms, with a smoked mayonnaise. The vegetables were very good and the smoked mayonnaise added wonderful flavor.

Marlene's second course was a venison steak and stew combination. The steak was tasty, but chewy; the stew meat was tender and sweet.

I chose the piglet. The neck was a bit chewy, but tasty; the sausage and belly were very good.

Longing for the rice pudding I knew we would order our first night in Paris, when I saw it on the Wilde Zwijnen dessert menu, I couldn't resist. I should have. The pudding was not very good; it was dry and mealy.

Overall, we enjoyed our meal at Wilde Zwijnen and would definitely recommend it. Just stay away from the rice pudding and don't go during flu season.
